No one has donated yet but I haven't given up.
Meet Gypsy Rose, a beautiful 3 year old lab. We thought Gypsy was born with Addison's Disease, and almost died at 8 months old. When I got her she was full of life. Then started to slow down. Within a few weeks she stopped eating then started getting really sick.
I took her to a Vet, he stabilized her, kept her warm on a large heating pad and took tests, but couldn't figure out what was wrong. He asked me if she had eaten antifreeze. I told him of course not, she is always with me. I even take her to work with me, and she doesn't run loose.
(I recently talked to her original owner and was told that all the pups that the new owners had continued to feed Diamond Dog food have died, except Gypsy. The pups that were given other food by their new owners are alive and healthy. It appears she was not born with Addison's. I found out about the Diamond Dog Food class action law suit to late.)
She had to spend the night at an expensive emergency clinic, because they closed at 6PM. The next day I took her to a different Vet. After numerous tests, he concluded she has Addison Disease, which is kidney failure. He told me she must have born with it. Not being aware of the Diamond Dog Food recall. He gave her a $100 shot, and prescribed 2 pills to give her daily. She will need the $100 shot every month for the rest of her life, plus one pill a day.
She is doing great now, and still getting her shot every couple months (I try to wait as long as possible), plus daily pills to keep her alive! If I hadn't been working a ton of hours, she probably wouldn't be alive today. I still had a hard time coming up with all the money for 2 Vets and the emergency clinic at once! It was around $2000 for those few days, and they don't like to wait!
I called, and sent emails to every animal charity I could find, but no one would help. One told me since it is a fatal disease, they wouldn't help. If it was a broken leg, or something that would heal, they would.
I called my friend that gave her to me to tell her about it, because she still had Gypsy's Mom and brother, Austin (I thought). Austin had passed away recently from the same thing, she was really upset. The Vet in a small town in South Dakota didn't know what to do for him. If my friend would have had somewhere to get help, she could have taken him to a better Vet and Austin would be alive today.
Gypsy is still doing great with the help of a pill every day and a shot every few months.
Update on Gypsy Rose: I am so sorry to report, I lost Gypsy last July, 2011. The last shot she was given just made her worse, not full of pep like usual, as the day went on. I took her to the emergency clinic, and she only got worse by morning.
I had 4 wonderful years with her, and am very grateful for the time we had together. RIP sweet girl.
There is a HUGE need for an organization that will help low income pet owners with Vet bills.
I tried to organize a program for donations and grant money to help with pet care to provide a better quality of life for pets and their owners, but no one helped or donated. I think WE feel worse than they do when we can't afford to help them!
